J. Monroe Johnson papers, 1894-1964.

Chiefly letters, 1917-1919, of J.M. Johnson to his wife Helen while serving with the 117th Engineer Regiment in the Rainbow (42nd) Division in Europe; later materials include speeches, 1919-1936, and letters and publications documenting Johnson's years of service working for the U.S. Government, 1935-1956, on various positions involving transportation, including the Interstate Commerce Commission and Office of Defense Transportation during and after World War II. Box 1: Correspondence (1894-1919); Box 2: Correspondence (1919-1958 and undated); Box 3: Speeches (1919-1936); Box 4: Bound volumes, consisting of letter book of the 42nd Infantry Division, Jan.-Apr. 1919; photo album, chiefly 1919 but some items as late as 1940s, primarily images of France and Germany; appointment calendars, 1936 and 1944; and published items including books and 3 issues of newsletter, Rainbow Reveille (1925, 1927, and 1942). Oversize materials (on site) include maps of France and elsewhere in Europe used by Johnson during World War I; also includes various posters dating to mid-decades of 20th century (chiefly World War II).
